The Reaper’s Trail

The Reaper’s Trail recalls an important part of the history of Catalonia: when the Spanish troops stayed here and were cared for by the Catalans during the war against the French, which ended with the Treaty of the Pyrenees, the peasants rebelled against the demands and abuse of the soldiers. The first revolts took place after the looting and burning of towns such as Riudarenes, Santa Coloma de Farners and Amer.

The trail follows the route that the reapers followed when the revolt began. It begins in Santa Coloma de Farners and ends in Vidreres. It covers a distance of 17 km, passing the villages of Riudarenes and Sils that, like Santa Coloma, were protagonists in this period of Catalan history that inspired the National Anthem of Catalonia.

Santa Coloma is mentioned in the anthem’s lyrics, as shown in the following three verses:

Contra tots els catalans,
ja veieu quina n'han feta:
seguiren viles i llocs
fins al lloc de Riu d'Arenes;

n'han cremat un sagrat lloc,
que Santa Coloma es deia;
cremen albes i casulles,
i caporals i patenes,
i el Santíssim Sagrament,
alabat sia per sempre.

Mataren un sacerdot,
mentre que la missa deia;
mataren un cavaller,
a la porta de l'església,
en Lluís de Furrià,
i els àngels li fan gran festa.

Against all the Catalans,
now you see what they have done;
there are villages and places
up to the place of Riu d’Arenes;

They have burned a sacred place,
that was called Santa Coloma;
they burn albs and chasubles,
and chalices and patens,
and the Holy Sacrament,
will be praised forever.

They killed a priest,
while he was giving Mass;
they killed a man,
in the doorway of the church,
his name was Lluís de Furrià,
and the angels celebrate him.
